A live action X-Men TV show!?! What!?! Yes, it’s true! A few months ago FX placed an order for a pilot episode of a show called Legion, which is to be based on one of the more interesting and eccentric characters in the X-Men universe. Ever since then, fans have been waiting for more details about the show and today finally brings some. Marvel TV and FX have announced the casting of Rachel Keller as the lead actress for the show. No additional casting information is known at this time, including who will play the titular character of Legion, but the casting of such a strong, new actress will be exciting for many, especially fans of Fargo where Keller was a breakout star of the second season.
Although there aren’t many details of Keller’s role, Deadline reports that she will play a “scrappy, optimistic woman in her 20s.” The character is also described as having powers that are “tied to human touch,” which of course brings to mind Rogue. 2015 was a good year for Keller, with roles on The Mentalist, Supernatural, and Fargo in addition to her Legion casting. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for this captivating young actress.
Fans of the comics are especially excited for this show, as Legion, whose real name is David Haller, is one of the more unique, and downright interesting characters in the Marvel universe. He is the bastard son of Charles Xavier (which answers one question about the extent of his paralysis) who is diagnosed with pretty much every mental disorder you can think of, from schizophrenia to autism to multiple personalities. The cool thing about his multiple personality disorder, and the reason he is called Legion, is that each one of his personalities controls a different power. One personality controls his telekinesis, while another controls his pyrokinesis, while another still controls his telepathy. He even has some really odd personalities like a centaur, a dinosaur with a clock on its face, and a pirate who belches acid gas.
Legion (which is not to be confused with the 2010 film in which Jarvis/Vision fights old lady demons) is being produced by several mainstays of Marvel and X-Men properties, including Lauren Schuler Donner, Bryan Singer, and Jeph Loeb. Although the show is based off of the X-Men comics, it will stand alone and will not tie into 20th Century Fox‘s X-Men movie franchise. In addition to Legion, an X-Men based TV show is also being developed for the Fox network. Not much is know about it, but it’s called Hellfire and, as you might have guessed, it’s going to center on the Hellfire Club, which made an appearance in X-Men: First Class. The bad news is that, since it’s television, Kevin Bacon probably isn’t going to reprise his role as Sebastian Shaw. The good news is that January Jones probably isn’t going to reprise her role as Emma Frost.
What do you think about this casting announcement? Are you excited for Legion?
