Hot on the heels of Star Wars: The Force Awakens toppling Avatar to become the highest grossing movie in North America, fans are chomping at the bit for the next adventure in a galaxy far, far away. And while we may have to wait two years for Episode 8 to hit the theaters, that doesn’t mean we have to wait that long for more Star Wars. The first planned franchise spin off Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to light up the box office next December, and while we know the basic story, details have been few and far between, that is until now.
In September, Rogue One star Mads Mikkelson signed an autograph for a fan revealing his character name to be Galen. Never ones to let a nugget of information to go un-analyzed, fans are speculating that Mikkleson could be playing Galen Marek, the secret apprentice to Darth Vader that appears in The Force Unleashed games. Marek was instrumental in the formation of the Rebel Alliance after uniting several of the Empires enemies. His character is said to be the man that took over the Geonosian Death Star project and is being compared to Robert Oppenheimer, one of the creators of the atomic bomb who later expressed deep remorse in it’s creation. Marek flees the empire and recruits Felicity Jones‘ character to help set things right.
In other Rogue One news, Guy Henry, best known as Pius Thickness in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 has signed on to join the cast. Rumors are that he will play an Imperial Officer of some kind but no other details about who he will play are known. Making Star Wars has also gotten their hands on a detailed description of a scene from the movie involving a crashed X-Wing on a planet similar to Mos Espa or Tattooine.
“On the street, two men walk in front of the wreckage of the black-and-white X-wing fighter. It isn’t clear if they were a part of the crash or if it was just a part of their entrance. The first man has a long rifle that in spirit seems to resemble Doc Brown’s riffle from Back to the Future Part III. He has a black leather trench coat on. His mask is dull red and the visor is like a cross between Kylo Ren and and the Imperial guards from Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. The other man has a brown trench coat and a really big rifle with a stock that reminds me of the guns used on Hoth by the rebels in The Empire Strikes Back. If I had to guess, I would say these two are probably bounty hunters or two of the coolest extras of all time.”
Keep in mind that none of these rumors have any kind of official confirmation, but it seems the description comes from a practical set that was built at Pinewood Studios. And finally it is being reported that the trailer for Rogue One is set to premiere in front of Captain America: Civil War.
I know I for one am excited to see these spin off movies fill in some gaps in the story of Star Wars, especially now that the massive extended universe has been wiped away. What about you?
