Hype for the upcoming movie Ready Player One isn’t quite buzzing around the internet yet, but give it time. It’s coming. The film is based off of the debut novel of the same name by author Ernest Cline, the rights to which were purchased by Warner Bros. in an intense bidding war a year before the book was even published. Ready Player One will be directed by one of the most acclaimed filmmakers of all time, Steven Spielberg, and will star Olivia Cooke in a lead role. With things quickly falling into place for this movie, the casting search has turned to the villain of the film and led to veteran actor Ben Mendelsohn, who is currently busy filming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The path to this movie got its start with up-and-coming writer and spoken word artist Ernest Cline. Cline first gained notoriety in 1996 when he wrote a sequel to The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension (entitled Buckaroo Bonzai Against the World Crime League) and made it available online. From there, Cline did some screenplay writing before setting his sights on novels in 2010 with Ready Player One. The book itself is a dystopian science fiction novel dealing heavily with virtual reality and games, involving an easter egg hunt to inherit the entire virtual reality company, almost like a cyberpunk Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Mirroring the plot of the book, the book contained an elaborate easter egg leading to staged video game tests and finally the grand prize of a 1981 DeLorean. Here’s to hoping that viewing the film will lead moviegoers to win a full-size working replica of the Batmobile or maybe even the keys to Warner Bros. studios.
Directed by Movie Wizard Steven Spielberg, the movie also boasts Zak Penn (X2, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers) assisting with the screenplay. Ben Mendelsohn would make a marvelous addition to the cast. He is an accomplished actor with films such as The Dark Knight Rises, Killing Them Softly, and Exodus: Gods and Kings under his belt. Currently, he has a major role in this year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is the most anticipated film of the year. New information is still forthcoming on this project, but there seems to be a lot to be excited about.
