[Spoilers ahead, so beware.] Fans of The Walking Dead have already experienced a rollercoaster of emotions in season six. Forget the usual danger of a zombie lurking in the shadows waiting for the right moment when our heroes aren’t paying attention, we’ve had to deal with the near-feral group called of humans the Wolves, the more organized but no less demented group that Daryl crossed paths, and let’s not forget, lots and lots of walkers. Now, an executive producer on the show is hinting the the second half of season six will feature a big death, and he strongly hints who it might end up being. We’ll say it again: Spoliers!
To recap: first there was Rick’s discovery of a ravine full of hungry walkers just miles from their sanctuary in Alexandria. With that discover also came the conclusion that said walkers would be finding their way out of the ravine, and the crew needed to prevent them from making their way to Alexandria.
Fans watched Glen, played by Steven Yuen, give Nicholas yet another chance to change his life, and then they watched it backfire as Nicholas couldn’t mentally handle being trapped by the horde of Walkers, therefore taking his own life and in the process taking Glen down with him. Fans waited for multiple episodes to see if Glen would ever make it back to his wife Maggie and his unborn child, and were elated to discover that Glen was, in fact, alive and being helped by Enid, albeit reluctantly.
Then there was the fall of Alexandria and watching their friends become trapped in what was supposed to be a safe haven. But what was the most anxiety inducing for a lot of fans was meeting the crew of a man named Negan. The name alone is able to induce fear in most comic book fans, and even people that haven’t read the comic know that he is one of the most badass rivals to the Rick and Company in Walking Dead lore..
Early in the year, it was announced that Jeffery Dean Morgan (Supernatural, The Good Wife), was cast to play the f-bomb dropping villain. Of course, comic readers are aware that Glen ultimately meets his demise at the hands of Negan in issue #100, and it seems now that season six is building to stay on track with that.
In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, executive producer Greg Nicotero used words such as “Relentless” and “heartbreaking” to describe the downward spiral of season six. “If you read the comic book, you know we’re climbing towards a major death,” he said
If the show stays true to canon, that death would be Glen’s. However, it could also be set up to look as if it could be Sasha, Abraham, or Daryl as well. And fans shouldn’t forget that Alexandra is still crawling with the undead so it doesn’t look as if anyone really is safe in the short term. There has also been speculation that Maggie is the one that dies, simply because Lauren Cohan now has a new shorter hair do. No matter who ends up biting it, (see what I did there), fans can be assured the second half of The Walking Dead will be just as emotionally charged as the first.
The Walking Dead returns Sundays at 9 pm on AMC in February.
