frowny lucas

Sci-fi fans across the world can remember a time, a bleak moment in history, when the Dark Side ruled the Star Wars franchise. It was the Era of the Jar-Jar, the Apocalypse of Council Meetings, the Reign of the Whining Anakin – Also known as the Decade of the Prequels. It was at this point when many Star Wars fans checked out. George Lucas had gotten old and lost the spirit of the original trilogy, producing three at-best mediocre installments of the beloved franchise. Then Disney bought up the rights, produced The Force Awakens and most are back on board again. But some wish for those dark times to return and are actively petitioning to have Lucas return to the fold and direct the final episode.

If you head on over to Change.org, you’ll find a petition. Within that petition you will see that fans are asking Disney to boot Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) from the director’s chair of Episode IX and bring Lucas back to finish up the new trilogy.

To quote this strange and confusing petition:

Bring back George Lucas for the Star Wars movies. Put the father of the franchise as director of Episode IX. We really want this, please.

We have no problem with Colin Trevorrow, but he’s not the right guy to direct Star Wars Episode IX. George Lucas as director of Episode IX would be the perfect way to end this new trilogy and make an epic farewell between the Father of Star Wars and the whole universe of the galaxy far, far away….

We would like to see him again involved with the franchise. Thank you so much.

As of the time of this writing, they have just over 3000 signatures of the 5000 they’re looking for. Out of the millions of Star Wars fans, you’d kinda think they’d go for more than just 5000, right? I mean, it’s a bit like pulling a drop of water out of the ocean. Disney isn’t like to respond, even if they do get all their signatures.

But still they pursue their quest to get Lucas returned to the franchise he created. And while Trevorrow’s Jurassic World was less than impressive, one has to wonder if replacing him with Lucas would be for the best. I guess it would all depend on whether you prefer Episodes I through III or Jurassic World. To me, that’s a bit like smelling two pairs of shit-stained underwear and trying to figure out which one is the least offensive…

Feel like supporting Lucas? Head on over and sign that petition! Or just ignore it like the other 99.9% of Star Wars fans are likely to do.
