It appears as though fans of the X-Men character Gambit can finally have some solid expectations for a Gambit solo film. Again. Gambit is one of the more interesting members of the X-Men and many a fan favorite, with his Cajun heritage and past as a thief. After the success of the first X-Men movie in 2000 (which helped to usher in the modern age of superhero movies) many fans have been waiting for a great live action version of Remy LeBeau. Sixteen years, one terrible version, and coming up on nine movies later, fans are still waiting. After many stalled starts and cast and crew uncertainty, the movie is finally set to start filming with star Channing Tatum.
The road to a Gambit solo film is long and fraught with peril, apparently. The idea for a live action Gambit started out great, with Bryan Singer planning to include him in the third X-Men movie and the role being offered to Josh Holloway. That incredible set-up was followed by a dark time for superhero movies. Singer’s departure from the series resulted in both Brett Ratner‘s X-Men: The Last Stand and Superman Returns (fortunately Christopher Nolan and Marvel Studios were primed to pick up the superhero slack). Ratner mercifully(?) cut Gambit from his film, which led to the character being used in the worst film in the X-Men franchise, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. 20th Century Fox seems committed to rectifying the sins of that movie, with Deadpool on the way and Gambit now set to begin filming in March.
There’s no way to know how prepared Tatum is for the role of Gambit, but one thing is certain- his hair is ready. Rise of the Planet of the Apes‘ Rupert Wyatt was originally set to direct the movie, but now it appears the job will go to Doug Limon, who directed The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow. Set to costar is Lea Seydoux, of Inglourious Basterds, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and Spectre fame. Originally slated for a 2016 release date, Gambit has been pushed back into 2017.
What do you think about this solo Gambit film? What are some things you hope to see included in the movie?
