DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has the entire time stream to play around in and the show is wasting no time skipping back and forth through time to tell the tale of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. One big payoff for old school DC fans will be when the group travels back in time to the old west where they’ll meet bounty hunter Jonah Hex. Now some of you might be asking yourself, Hex who? Well, we’ll tell ya after the jump pilgrim.
Marc Guggenheim, executive producer for Legends of Tomorrow recently broke the Jonah Hex news when talking with Variety.
Ever since we decided that ‘Legends’ would involve time travel, we were eager to do a story set in the Old West. But if you’re going to do a story set in the DC Universe version of the Old West, you simply MUST include Jonah Hex in it. We’re thrilled about bringing another well-known, beloved DC character to television.
As a long time Jonah Hex fan, this is some fantastic news. Hex fans kinda got shafted when the Jonah Hex movie hit the big screen. The 2010 movie starring Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich, and Michael Fassbender tanked at the box office with only $10 million in world-wide box office on a budget of $47 million.
With that cast, you’d have expected it to do better, but it seems that Jonah Hex was a 2010 movie that should have been made back in the 90’s. (Didn’t Hollywood learn anything from Wild Wild West…?) What really astounds me is that Jimmy Haywood was put in the director’s chair. At the time he had one director credit for an animated movies. He clearly had no idea how to take these actors and get the best performances out of them.
So we would not recommend anyone thinking they should check out what Jonah Hex is all about, to start with the movie. Hell no, stay the hell away from it. Better that you check out the comics, which can be found in trade paperback at your local comic book store.
Another great way to get to know Jonah Hex is the series of DC Motion Comics. We’ve embedded two below to check out. These are a great series and look at the character, the art styles used in the series, and the characters Hex runs into in the west.
Two Gun Mojo is a favorite, written by Joe R. Lansdale, with art by Tim Truman, the story is seriously out there, a mix of Western and Horror, but perfect for Jonah Hex.
This next motion comic is more the old style 70’s Jonah Hex. All western and gun fighting. The trick is to have a mixture of both and hopefully Legends of Tomorrow will have just that when Hex makes his debut appearance in episode 11 of the series.
Of course there’s no casting news for Hex yet, but there are certainly plenty of actors out there that fit the part. Who would you cast?
