Darth Vader is one of the most fearsome villains in movie history, but his appearances have been somewhat limited to the original trilogy and a couple of minutes at the end of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. That all changed last fall when Vader appeared on the animated Star Wars: Rebels as the new big bad chasing rogue Jedi Kanan and his apprentice across the galaxy. But what about live-action? There have been rumors that Vader pops up in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and now there’s a hint that this has gone beyond rumor to the realm of fact. From the sounds of it, expect Vader in Rogue One and more.
According to the website, Making Star Wars, which had some pretty reliable spoilers about The Force Awakens in advance of its release, Darth Vader is most definitely in Rogue One, and according to them, the costume department “meticulously recreated” the Darth Vader suit for the film. Why “meticulous”? Because Vader will be “a prominent player in a few scenes and something to fear for the heroes,” and beyond Rogue One he’ll be “alive and kicking in the future of the Star Wars universe beyond just this film as well.”
On top of that, the rumors are circling that James Earl Jones will return to voice Darth Vader in Rogue One, which would make sense since he has been *the* voice of Darth Vader since the first Star Wars in 1977, and even came back for the animated version of the Dark Lord of the Sith in Rebels. If Vader appears voice-less, which, to be honest, sounds a lot more intimidating, it will still be a great moment for the film and the character. Darth Vader’s last live-action appearance in Revenge, including the pathetic and maligned “No!”, left something of a bittersweet after taste, and the character deserves to get some mystique back.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be in theaters everywhere December 16.
