If you follow Captain America in the comics, then you know he’s been out of commission for a while. While he has had a couple very worthy successors, Steve Rogers will always be Captain America. For fans of Steve Rogers, there’s some good news. During Marvel‘s Captain America: 75 Heroic Years special on ABC, a sneak peek of a new Captain America series was shown. Yes, Steve Rogers fans, it appears that the classic Cap will be returning in a new series entitled Steve Rogers: Captain America, which will be written by Nick Spencer with art by Jesus Saiz!
Those of you following Captain America in the comics know that the past few years have been a bit rough on ol’ Steve. He was killed, at which point the Captain America mantle was taken up by James “Bucky” Barnes. Then after phasing in and out of time and space and having Red Skull possess his body, Steve Rogers was finally able to return for a bit, before having his powers taken and turning into an old man, at which point the Captain America mantle was taken up by Rogers’ longtime friend Sam Wilson aka Falcon.
After having to feel his actual age for a while, Steve is finally sick of it and Marvel.com confirms that he will be returning as Captain America in a new book after the newest crossover event Avengers: Standoff. About the new Cap book, Spencer said:
“Without spoiling too much of Standoff at this early date, something happens that restore Steve to full vigor, which will obviously greatly impact his own mission and his standing within the Marvel Universe. The biggest part of that? He’s Captain America once again.”
Steve’s return won’t oust Wilson from his position, though. Spencer says, “”When Steve handed the shield to Sam, it didn’t come with any caveats.” Wilson will continue with his role as Captain America in Captain America: Sam Wilson.
While Sam Wilson focuses more on topical, current events, Steve Rogers is going to be going to battle with his old foes Hydra. His costume and shield have been updated and he’ll have Sharon Carter fighting by his side. And now for a look at some concept art and the new cover!
What do you think about Steve Rogers return as Captain America? What would you like to see from the new book?
