Marvel‘s Doctor Strange has cast Benedict Wong (The Martian, Marco Polo) as important piece of the Doctor Strange mythos, his manservant/sidekick Wong. Yes, there are a lot of name things going on in this movie. We’ve got two Benedicts and Wong is playing Wong, everything is alright, alright, alright. Wong joins a talented cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen.
There’s sure to be some updating of the Wong character, who went from the 60’s style manservant to the later butt kicking support staff of Doctor Strange in the comics. One important role that Wong plays is as a protector, because Doctor Strange often leaves his body when astral projecting into other dimensions or just messaging some other hero across town, which leaves Strange vulnerable to physical attack. Strange’s enemies know this and will try to take advantage at some point in the movie.
Benedict Wong was fantastic in The Martian and perhaps someone who has watched Marco Polo can chime in about his performance in that series as Kubla Khan in the comments section below.
While scanning his IMDB page this little gem popped out, he was Prime in The IT Crowd!
