It was about 22 years ago that Kevin Smith took Clerks to the Sundance Film Festival, and the rest, as they say, is history. Smith is back at Sundance this year with Yoga Hosers, the second in his planned line of Canadian-themed horror movies that began in 2014 with Tusk and will continue (at some point, possibly following Clerks 3 and Mallrats 2), with Moose Jaws. There’s no trailer yet, but Smith has just released the fateful clip where the Colleens – Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith) and Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp) meet a couple of boys that invite them to a party. A senior party!
Courtesy of Smith’s YouTube page, here’s the first clip from Yoga Hosers. Just warning though, Canadian convenient stores don’t actually keep maple syrup behind the counter. Usually, that’s where the store keeps its collection of empty stubbies. Or the Gordie Howe shrine. Anyhoo…
First of all, you probably got a strong Clerks vibe off this clip with Smith as the Dante and Depp as the Randall. Added to that, Smith seems to be playing with a bit Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, a little Clueless (“Could you stop being so basic?”), and a little classic middle-aged guy trying to understand youth culture (Have you ever heard anyone say, “I’m going to ‘Gram the shit out of this”? Exactly). No sign of Lily-Rose’s dad Johnny Depp though, who will be reprising his role as Quebecois detective Guy Lapointe in the film.
Now that you’ve gotten a taste, here’s the official synopsis for the film.
Colleen and Colleen are BFFs AF. Manitoba is where they go to school together, do yoga together, play in a band together, and work together at a boring convenience store. Life is whatevs, but also on fleek. That’s kinda what being 15 and a half is all about. #RealTalk
So when two older guys invite the Colleens to a senior party, the girls are determined to go no matter what—even if that “what” is a terrible, secret evil that threatens to destroy everything decent and polite about Canada. Can Colleen and Colleen save the day and go viral? Will those senior boys prove squad-worthy? And what was that about a convenience store? I swear it sounded familiar…
Yoga Hosers screened for the first time yesterday at Sundance, no word yet on when it might make its way to theaters though. Stay tuned.
