Wicked Cool Toys, together with Alchemy II, is giving new life to an old classic. Much like the work they’ve been doing with Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, another brand is coming back armed with “toys, content and a comprehensive merchandising program”. The toy in question is none other than the blinking, mouth moving, pop a cassette into the tape deck hidden in his back and listen to him read you a story: Teddy Ruxpin. The bear was available between 1985 and 2010, and was so successful upon release that an animated series was spawned in his image in 1987. He was named one of the 100 greatest toys of all time by Time magazine, and he might just be making a comeback to the mainstream market. If you’re not satisfied with the explaination of “magic” when wondering how Teddy’s technology worked, here’s what was actually going on inside the bear. The cassettes you inserted into Teddy’s tape deck contained two audio tracks: one for audio, and one for a data stream of cues to let the bear know when to move his mouth. The act of synching Teddy’s mouth movements to what he was “reading” was pretty impressive at the time, as most other talking toys just made general, stock movements, or didn’t move at all. Michael Rinzler, Co-President and Founding Partner of Wicked Cool Toys echoed this fact:

“Teddy Ruxpin’s play-pattern and infusion of technology was way ahead of his time back in the 80’s, and with continued massive parental awareness it’s the right time to bring back this coveted brand,”

Co-President and Partner of Wicked Cool Toys, Jeremy Padawer, added:

“We are embracing the past and making Teddy Ruxpin as adorable and engaging as ever, while innovating Teddy with features that will amaze parents and their tech savvy children.”

Over 30 song and story filled cassettes and cartridges were released the first time around for Teddy Ruxpin, and it’s as of yet unknown if that same content will be re-vamped and re-formatted for this new Teddy model, and it’s also unknown whether any merchandise based on the animated Teddy Ruxpin and Friends will be included in the reboot.

More info and specifics will surely surface and Wicked Cool Toys and Alchemy II continue their search for partners at Toy Fair, Kidscreen Summit and more of the like.
