It looks like the casting odds were ever in her favor as the Power Rangers movie locks down Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, The LEGO Movie) to play Rita Repulsa. Banks tweeted the announcement earlier today and already shows signs of getting into character. While she was always colorful and proper as Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games, Rita Repulsa will require Banks to really let loose.
Here’s Banks tweet that celebrated the casting with a wink and a nod to the original debut of the character in the Power Rangers series.

Machiko Soga, who played the television Rita Repulsa in the 90’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series passed away in 2006, but remains a beloved villain for all Power Rangers fans. She brought a manic energy to the character that we can only hope that Banks might match.
Dean Israelite, (Project Almanac), is set to direct and there’s already been some casting of the teenage Power Rangers: RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, and Dacre Montgomery.
The true hope of this project is that Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who also wrote X-Men: First Class, are the writers tackling the challenge of updating this series for the big screen.
