It seems that you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a super hero movie in Hollywood these days. No less than 7 of them are set to come out this year alone just from DC and Marvel. And recently, smaller comic publisher Valiant Comics announcing that they will be throwing their properties into the mix some time next year. it seems that the time may be right for some non-mainstream heroes to hit the big screen, and now a long circulated reboot of the Zorro franchise looks like it is making serious headway with the announcement that they have finally signed a director.
Jonas Cuaron, son of Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron has signed on to helm the Zorro reboot, Z. The film is set to take place in some nondescript future, yes, you read that right, this Zorro reboot will be set in the future. The screenplay has been bouncing around the studios for several years now, and has several times came close to production, but now with such a strong name attached, we may now get to see this version of Zorro in space.
It is far to early in the production for any real details to come out and no word yet on whether Cuaron will rework the original screenplay, called Zorro Reborn. Production is slated to start sometime this summer at Pinewood’s Dominican Republic based studios.
Now, it has always been common knowledge that when you take a series and set it in the future or in outer space that the property is gasping its last breath, but with Cuaron lending it some credibility, who knows what the outcome could be, but they had better make sure the script is good and tight before filming or we could just end up with another Jason X on our hand, or, god forbid, Leprechaun In Space. But, as they say, only the future knows what is in store…
