The mysterious development of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has left fans deeply curious. The success of the first GOTG and the unique nature of Marvel’s space faring characters creates a lot of opportunity to make the uniquely weird and wonderful world of the first film to become even more uniquely weird, but director James Gunn is playing his cards pretty close to his chest. He’s not even responding to rumor control anymore, although he did recently post a behind-the-scenes shot of the original Guardians rehearsing. So add this new to the file: comedian Steve Agee will be joining the cast for the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.
Nothing official has come out of Marvel Studios. The source for this piece of news was the Doug Loves Movies podcast, on which Agee regularly appears. When Agee was absent in the most recent episode, Scoot McNairy observed, “[Steve] just found out because he’s in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he has to shoot that bullsh*t instead of being here with us today.” You have to admit, that’s a pretty good excuse, right?
So who is Steve Agee? He’s an actor, writer and director with numerous credits to his name including appearing on New Girl as Outside Dave and as Steve in The Sarah Silverman Program. He’s also written for Jimmy Kimmel Live, done a lot of voice over work on shows like Adventure Time, and has directed several short films. Now he will join Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, and Michael Rooker, all returning from the original Guardians, and Pom Klementieff who was previously cast as Mantis for the sequel. It’s widely expected that Kurt Russell‘s participation will be announced soon, joining the cast as Star Lord’s father.
Guardians Vol. 2 is expected to begin principal photography on February 11, 2016 for a May 5, 2017 release date.
