In 2012, Universal Pictures did something weird, they released a Jason Bourne movie without Jason Bourne. It was a bold move that did not pay off despite the presence of Jeremy Renner, who at the time was making a play to take over every major Hollywood franchise. But Mission: Impossible stuck with Tom Cruise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains without a Hawkeye solo movie, and this summer, the Bourne legacy will return to the powerful hands of Matt Damon, who returns for more global @$$ kicking in this first look at the imaginatively named Jason Bourne.
This thing’s been pretty under the radar for a major Hollywood sequel, but from the looks of things in this 30-second Super Bowl ad, the Bourne reunion of Damon and director Paul Greengrass looks like it’s going to be, in a word, “Awesome!”
It’s been nine years since The Bourne Ultimatum, and it looks like Jason Bourne has stayed ripped thanks to that Fight Club workout. What he’s up to this time, plot-wise speaking, is still unknown, but the new Bourne movie will feature Alicia Vikander as the female lead, while Bourne will be chased across continents by Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassel. And was that a Las Vegas car chase in there? Perhaps Bourne’s going for a touch of Bond by walking into a casino and doing some spy master gambling. It’s only fair, Bond’s stolen a lot from Bourne over the years.
Hope’s are high for this one. While The Bourne Ultimatum was financially successful, many fans thought it didn’t deliver story-wise. Will Jason Bourne be the do-over we want? Fingers crossed.
Jason Bourne will be in theaters everywhere on July 26.
