The sudden announcement of 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s imminent release last month caught all observers by surprise, especially since it features three well-known and busy actors – Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher Jr. and John Goodman. The fact that producer J.J. Abrams could pull off another secret Cloverfield project, especially with top-drawer acting talent, is a magic trick the man behind the mystery box deserves a lot of credit for pulling off. Adding fuel to the speculative fire now is a new 30-second ad that premiered during the Super Bowl, and while the first trailer showed off the tension indoors, this TV commercial offers hints of what’s happening outdoors.
Voila! The new ad for 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Curiouser and Curiouser. From the looks of it, the plot is similar to the scene in Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds where Tom Cruise’s character and his daughter take shelter with Tim Robbins’ character, who’s slowly and surely going mad from being hunkered down in his basement surrounded by aliens. Perhaps, this isn’t far from what 10 Cloverfield Lane is about.
Another notable scene: the end when Winstead’s character sees lights behind the house. An approaching UFO perhaps? One of the question marks about this Cloverfield is whether or not the story will be tied to the 2008 original in more than name, like perhaps the house these characters are held up in is in the destructive path of the monster from Cloverfield, who, after destroying New York, is slowly but surely making his way inland. But now there’s the suggestion that some new threat is afoot. Did the aliens send more than one monster this time? Is there a fleet of ships laying siege to Cloverfield Lane and planet Earth? I guess we will find out in just one, short month.
10 Cloverfield Lane will be in theaters everywhere on March 11th.
