Frank Grillo, who we’ll all see come May 6th as Crossbones in the Russo Brother‘s Captain America: Civil War has another franchise rolling out on July 1st when The Purge: Election Year hits the big screen. This time Grillo is back as Leo Barnes tasked with protecting a presidential candidate (Elizabeth Mitchell) during an election year Purge. Let’s take a look at the mayhem in this first trailer.
As goofy as The Purge can be sometimes, the first two films have been financial block busters when it comes to the numbers. The first film took a $3 million dollar budget and turned it into $90 million at the world-wide box office. The second started out at a $9 million budget and cranked out $112 million world-wide. If this third film continues the trend, the budget should be in the neighborhood of $20 million this time around.
What do you think? There are a lot of stories to be told in this franchise, and as long as each continues to make the kind of money at the box office that the first two have, we’ll keep seeing Purge movies hitting the big screen.
It’s also the reason we’ll not get a Dredd sequel for years if ever. One doesn’t take a $50 million dollar budget and only bring back $35 million in world-wide box office and expect someone to keep shoveling money into that fire pit… as much as we want them to.
