You may have missed this last night on The Walking Dead, seeing as how you were probably being pulled off the ceiling after reacting to all the high drama, but a brand new 10 Cloverfield Lane trailer premiered during the commercial break. The sudden and surprising sequel and/or spin-off of the 2008 found footage hit Cloverfield will hit theaters in just a couple of weeks, and darned if still have any idea what it’s going to be about. This new trailer sends a bold message thematically though suggesting that there will be monsters outside, and inside, the bunker beneath the titular setting.
We now take you to an underground bunker where Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr. are hiding from… Something. Or are they? (Actually, the trailer makes it pretty clear that there’s a good reason why they’re in the bunker, but what? WHAT?!?!?!)
So what’s the takeaway? We’ve learned that Winstead’s character and Gallagher’s character arrived at Goodman’s bunker separately, except that Winstead had an “accident” and was brought to the bunker by Goodman for her “safety.” Oh, and everyone outside is dead. Well, fear of what’s going on outside is a pretty good way to make people agreeable to their own confinement, but the gag in 10 Cloverfield Lane seems to be that it’s true that there’s a danger inside *and* outside the bunker.
We get a glimpse of that again at the end of the trailer with the lights behind the house, the same shot that the Super Bowl spot ended on, but this time, if you listen to the soundtrack, there are definitely some monster sounds. The creators, including producer J.J. Abrams and director Dan Trachtenberg, have been coy about the connections between the Cloverfields: is it two different threats, or is it the same monster that they failed to kill in the first one? We will find out for sure in just a few weeks.
10 Cloverfield Lane will be in theaters everywhere on March 11.
