If nerds know one thing, it’s that Disney plays for keeps. After The Force Awakens blew the lid off the box office, Star Wars: Episode VIII, seems to be well underway, with filming starting…just today, apparently. But what’s that? There’s more? Of course there is!
The film began its principal photography in Pinewood Studios in London just today (February 15, 2016). The film’s director, Rian Johnson, will direct the film based on his own screenplay and will keep true to the established short story, picking up from where The Force Awakens left off. If the established list of cast members is anything to go by, we are assuming that Mark Hamill will be reprising the role of the broken-hearted Jedi master, joined by up-and coming padawan Rey.
Beside the cameos by General Organa (Carrie Fisher), Finn (John Boyega) and Sith wannabe Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), the film is also scheduled to feature new arrivals with Benicio Del Toro (possibly playing the Galaxy’s most suave bastard), Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and up-and-coming new challenger Kelly Marie Tran. The film is being produced by by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, with J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin and Tom Karnowski as executive producers.
The film is scheduled for release on December 15, 2017, just in time to get your space opera buzz next Christmas. We are assuming that TR-8R will finally get the speaking role he deserves, hoping that Phasma will get to do more than just be a background ornament with opinions and Kylo Ren will not take off his mask, this time. Meanwhile, you can get yourself pumped for dat sweet scifi hype by watching the following teaser:
