There were some that were surprised by the success of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy when the film hit screens in 2014.  There were some that felt Marvel was taking a gamble on a film that starred a talking raccoon packing a machine gun and a tree whose entire vocabulary contains only three words: “I am Groot”.  Then, there were the smart ones who saw the unlimited potential of having director James Gunn take the property from page to screen.  If you are in this latter group, you know you have bragging rights after GOTG took in $773mil across the globe.  When the sequel was announced, it really was no surprise and now, at long last, returning director Gunn has announced that after recently starting production, official photography on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has begun and, better yet, Gunn has treated fans to the first official image.  And yes, it is pretty awesome.

The news comes directly from Gunn’s official Twitter account and, really, it doesn’t get more to the point than this:

GOTG Vol. 2 reunites Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot, respectively, and hits theaters on May 5, 2017. Details are few and far between, as is generally the case with a new Marvel movie, but Gunn has mentioned that audiences will learn the identity of Star-Lord’s father, though the bearer of that particular title has been a subject of hot debate across the interwebs and in geek circles. Some insist that Gunn will grab Star-Lord’s comic book father, J’Son of Spartax. Others believe that fans have already met daddy dearest in the outrageous Collector.  Still others believe that Yondu may have set up a bit of a smoke screen and is more than just a father figure to Quill. And, again, Gunn included that Adam Warlock Easter egg for a reason, right?? As mentioned, this is definitely a debatable topic.

With this cast and the director behind the camera, there is a very good chance that GOTG Vol. 2 will surpass the first film at the box office without losing its breath.  The real question is whether or not Marvel will take the opportunity to use the franchise to introduce new characters that could get the stand alone movie treatment or, even, use the franchise as a springboard for new storylines moving forward.  There are rumors around that Thor 3 will actually touch on the Planet Hulk storyline and if that’s the case, perhaps the Guardians may even run into everyone’s favorite Green Goliath while bouncing around in outer space. Then again, perhaps Marvel will keep this particular property in a sandbox all to itself (yeah, right).

What are you hoping to see in the sequel? Do you have any theories on Star-Lord’s father?
