Principle photography started on James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and along with the first official look at the movie, there was a huge press release with a ton of interesting notes. Notes that include the casting confirmation of Kurt Russell in an as yet to be revealed role, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, and the return of Glenn Close as Nova Prime.

James Gunn confirmed Close’s return via Facebook as well as outing Klementieff as Mantis in the comments.

Official photography on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has started, and I couldn’t be more stoked. My favorite movie as…

In the comments he also continued to explain that Kurt Russell was not playing J’son, Peter Quill’s father in the comics, saying:

J’Son is not Peter’s father in the MCU.

Well unless he’s Moon Knight’s stoner neighbor.

It is interesting how Gunn has responded to all the J’son speculation. It could be that Russell is playing J’son, but J’son is not Peter Quill’s father, or he is playing another character, perhaps a combination of characters that will be Peter Quill’s father, just not named J’son.

Here’s the full press release:

Director James Gunn’s creative team also includes director of photography Henry Braham (“The Legend of Tarzan,” “The Golden Compass”); production designer Scott Chambliss (“Star Trek,” “Tomorrowland”); editors Fred Raskin (“The Hateful Eight,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Craig Wood (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”); three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky (“Captain America: Civil War,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”); Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Chris Townsend (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Iron Man 3”); stunt coordinator Tommy Harper (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” ); co-producer / first assistant director Lars Winther (“Captain America: Civil War,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”); and six-time Oscar® nominee, special effects supervisor Dan Sudick (“Captain America: Civil War,” “The Avengers”).

The original “Guardians of the Galaxy” was a hit with critics and audiences alike, earning over $770 million at the worldwide box-office, and holds the record as the most successful debut film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition, the film’s soundtrack went platinum and was nominated for a Grammy®.

The confirmation that Pom Klementieff is playing Mantis, the possible Celestial Madonna, trained by the renegade pacifist members of the Kree race who were caretakers of the Cotati, a telepathic race of sentient plants is fantastic. Mantis is an interesting character and we’re looking forward to seeing how Gunn translates the character to the big screen.

This Mantis confirmation might mean that Elizabeth Debicki and Chris Sullivan are playing roles that appeared in the comics when Mantis joined the GOTG. That opens up MoonDragon, Vance Astro, Bug, and others.

Gunn is sure to keep dropping hints and teasers on Social Media as the production progresses. Don’t forget that Chris Pratt is also very active on Twitter and such so we’ll get a steady stream of interesting bits even after we’ve seen the first trailer.
