Shirley Temple was America’s sweetheart, Cheryl Cole was the UK’s sweetheart, and as of this weekend, Deadpool is the world’s sweetheart. His transition to the big screen was so unfathomably successful that nobody (including us) can stop talking about him. After years of having a massive following among comic book fans, the Merc with a Mouth has officially crossed over into mainstream popularity with his first feature length film. Just look at how the character’s trending popularity literally skyrocketed after his movie came out.
At this point, about anything with his face on it is bound to be top-trending. We’ve already reported on a petition to build a statue in his honor, but a new petition is aiming to have him host one of the biggest television shows of all time.
A recent petition on change.org is calling for Deadpool to host none other than Saturday Night Live. While it’s pretty much impossible for a fictional character to host a live show, the realistic intent of this petition is to have Ryan Reynolds host the show in character as Deadpool. He has hosted the show before in 2009, so this doesn’t sound like too much of a stretch.
The petition was started by a Deadpool fan named Andrew Stege. Stege writes:
“I have not watched a full episode of SNL in years because I just haven’t been able to stomach an entire episode, but having Deadpool host, star, and be all over the episode would get the DVR set so I can watch it again and again!”
This isn’t the first time fans have petitioned for someone to host the show. Last year, an unsuccessful petition was made to have Nicholas Cage host the show (what a sight that would have been). Just a couple of weeks ago, Foo Fighters fans petitioned to have Dave Grohl host. Of course, nobody has ever hosted an episode in character. Just imagine Ryan Reynolds playing a character that has to play other characters during the course of the show. Sounds like a laugh riot, right?
However, as epic as this sounds, one would have to wonder how this would work out in real life. Reynolds would have to wear the costume for the entire three hour show, which might be easier said than done. What if he has to go to the bathroom? What if he gets heatstroke under the studio lights? What if the writers run out of material for the Deadpool to play other characters on the show?
On the other hand, if they can get this to work, we could end up with a hell of a show. SNL breaks the fourth wall quite often, so Deadpool could fit right in. One can only hope that the SNL writers can find a way to make this work.
