Gotham producers have been teasing the appearance of Azrael in the second half of this current season and now we’ve got a look at the character’s costume and a look behind the mask to confirm who is playing the role. The Sacred Order of St. Dumas has been busy this season, causing mayhem around Gotham and generally stirring up a hornets nest for James Gordon and Bruce Wayne. Now the Order is bringing out their big gun, Azrael.
If you guessed that Theo Galavan might fill Azrael’s boots, even after his death this season, you’d be dead on. Does this mean The Sacred Order of St. Dumas has access to, or their own version, of Ra’s Al Ghul’s Lazarus pool? That would be an interesting link in the chain. Check out James Frain‘s ears in the pictures below. They certainly weren’t that pointy before, could that be part of the resurrection process?

No flaming sword, but then that could be added later in post production. Gotham executive producer John Stephens described the character in an interview with ComicBook.com:
In many respects, Azrael will have many of the hallmarks and traits that we know from the comics. But it will have a brand-new twist upon that character; the way we’re going to bring that character into being on our show will be different than anything we’ve seen in the comics.
What do you think of the new look for Azrael? James Frain can certainly play the menacing villain, but how will he make the transition to semi hero Azrael? We’ll find out soon when Gotham returns for the second half of the season on Monday, Feb. 29th!
