Ask any 30-something what the best part of growing up was, and you will probably be regaled with stories of waking up on Saturday mornings, going to the kitchen and making a big bowl of cereal, grabbing your blanket and plopping yourself down in front of the TV to catch the latest offering of He-Man or Transformers. If you stick around long enough you may hear tales of a delicious green Orange-Tangerine flavored nectar, a drink whispered of in legend and now long forgotten to time. I speak of course of the amazing Ecto Cooler. But now, that legend seems to finally be poised to make a return to store shelves and our taste buds.
Last November, the internet blew up when news dropped that Coca-Cola, makers of the beloved Ghostbusters tie in fruit drink, renewed their trademark, leaving many to speculate that the drink was making a comeback. However many also said that Coke could be merely renewing the trademark to stop any other drink manufacturers from cashing in on their beloved drink with the release of the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot.
That is until now, when what looks like a prototype for the can of a new breed of Ecto Cooler appeared on E-Bay. There has been no official word yet from Coca-Cola, so take this news with a grain of salt, but the pictures look legit and one can always hope.
As you can see, the top is adorned with the Ghostbusters label with the phrase “Only In Theaters” below, suggesting that this is definitely some kind of tie in product. However, conspicuously missing in the drinks trademark Slimer mascot, but slime is obviously a huge part of the product. Whether this is an indication that Slimer won’t play a part in the reboot has yet to be seen.
The can does not have a top which seems to signify that it is some kind of product sample run.
The back also looks legit with all of the proper information and nutrition facts, with the information adjusted for the can size over the classic HI-C box.
In the years since Ecto Cooler disappeared from our lives, dozens of recipes have hit the internet from home brewers who simply couldn’t wait to get their Ecto On. I have even tried a few, and while certainly delicious, it just isn’t the same. Of course, if this does turn out to be a real product, this will just be the tip of the iceberg in the line of Ghostbuster inspired merchandise, but right now, my tongue is screaming because it can’t get here fast enough.
