The two seemed inseparable on screen and in real life. In fact, at one point, William Shatner had referred to Leonard Nimoy as his only real friend in life. However, it seems that their friendship was as vulnerable as any. And in the time leading up to his death, Shatner revealed that Nimoy had stopped speaking to his former captain. The reason will always remain a mystery, though, because Shatner never found out why.

In an interview with Jim Norton, Shatner was asked about why he didn’t attend Nimoy’s funeral. There were rumors that Shatner didn’t care about his former friend or that they were never that close to begin with. All those were debunked when Shatner revealed that Nimoy has simply stopped talking to him.

Shatner has been on a book tour to promote his new memoir about his friendship with Leonard Nimoy. He spoke with The Hollywood Reporter several days before his interview with Jim Norton, and spoke more about his falling out with Nimoy. In that interview, Shatner’s only guess as to why he may have stopped talking to him was because of a film that he was making in which Nimoy refused to be in.

“I don’t know. I thought he was joking at first and treated it as a joke because he sometimes would pretend and say, ‘No, I’m not going to do that’ and then say, ‘yes,’ so that’s what I thought he did. (Laughs.) But that time he really meant, no. … I just don’t know, and it is sad and it is permanent. I don’t know why he stopped talking to me.”

When asked if he had contact with any of Nimoy’s family, he said yes and that he was helping Nimoy’s son with a documentary he was putting together about his late father.
