Superhero nerds everywhere have recently been pelted with the mysterious announcement of the REBIRTH event, following a short teaser video that hints at a larger crisis which is probably heading toward New 52‘s way. While there has been no confirmation on whether or not this event will rework the DC continuity (Crisis-style), there has been some rampant speculation regarding the presence of a lot of Silver-Age heroes in the teaser’s line-up. The mystery is soon to be resolved, however, as the publisher recently went ahead to announce their full comic book line up for the duration of the event…

So what is REBIRTH? According to Geoff Johns‘ video announcement, the event is going to be an endeavor to:

“get back to what we loved”

The event is a direct continuation of his own series, Green Lantern: Rebirth and Flash: Rebirth, which gave the readers a brand-new prerspective into the larger appeal of the DC Multiverse. The event will be kicked off with a special 80-page one-shot that will be published on May 25th. According to what the writer has revealed, it will kick off with a mysterious narrator letting the readers know that:

“I love this world. But there is something missing.”

DC-Rebirth

So Geoff is keeping it nice and cryptic, but some of the hints in the video (and previous stories) have given us some interesting clues. Like, for example, how a lot of the most iconic DC superhumans are making all these cameos in their Silver Age getups, with special focus given on the Legion Of Superheroes and the Birds Of Prey or the JSA, characters who were thrown out of the larger continuity by the Flashpoint event. That caused a considerable ruckus, as it seemed that DC was perhaps planning to do away with their New 52 multiverse altogether at first, but things seem to have taken a different turn after all. Perhaps the company has come to realize that their grimdark approach isn’t working. Maybe, in light of the current circumstances, we need more optimistic weirdos to get us through the day. Maybe, just maybe, we need some of the old-school mind-boggling optimism, repurposed for the 21st century.

The REBIRTH line-up will feature 32 ongoing titles, with 15 of them shipping twice monthly. These numbers, of course, aren’t counting the number of event-related  character one shots that will also make the rounds for the duration of the newest cosmic hubbub, with issues retailing at $2.99. The announced titles feature a lot of the New 52 popular series, such as Earth 2, Red Hood and the Outlaws, and Deathstroke but a lot of the titles maintain their focus on such JLA sweethearts as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Flash.

The extended Superman family seems to also be having a field day, with titles announced for Super-Sons, Supergirl, and Superwoman. Just to also keep things confusing for the more dedicated nerds, Action Comics is once again reverting to its original numbering (with #937 being part of the event) and Detective Comics regressing to issue #934. Man, it’s a bad time to be an issue hoarder. The Teen Titans and their entourage are also being brought in the spotlight, with their titular series, as well as Titans, Nightwing, Blue Beetle, and Cyborg. We’re glad to see that the new Blue Beetle is picking up traction and we’re hoping that he won’t get the bad old grimdark treatment, even after the event. Batgirl and another series, Batgirl And The Birds Of Prey will retain their own series, especially considering the character’s rising popularity.

While there seems to be little mention of the JSA or the Legion Of Super Heroes, their presence in the video alludes to their importance regarding the event, so we’ll have a lot to look forward to from their end. We have outlined the full line up here, for your reading convenience:
