Remember 1993’s flop, Super Mario Bros.?  It seems Nintendo can’t seem to forget about it.  The film made back less than half what was spent to make it, starting a trend for video game film adaptations that would last until 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.  Movies based on video games have essentially been a laughing stock in Hollywood, and few studios want to risk making them.  This year may change all that.  Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed both come out in theaters later this year.  It seems actress and UFC fighter Ronda Rousey is eager for a Metroid movie to be made, and she wants to star in it as Samus Aran.

Nintendo has not given permission for any movie adaptation since the epic fail that was Super Mario Bros., although they have been loosening the reins some in the past few years.  They allowed Disney to borrow Bowser for 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph and loaned out Donkey Kong to appear in Pixels.  In August, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto announced that the company is starting to consider licensing its game properties to studios again in order to make film adaptations.

Metroid is currently in production, although whether or not it will actually make it to the big screen is still up for debate.  This is not the first time, after all, that someone has tried to make this film.  In 2004, director John Woo was set to work on the movie with Brad Foxhoven, but the project collapsed by 2007.  The continuation of the project will probably rest on the success of Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed.

Actress and UFC fighter Ronda Rousey, though, is determined it should succeed, though, because she wants to be in it.  And she would make one hell of a Samus.  In an interview with Game Spot she said:

“I’ve always wanted to be Samus.  That would be badass.  I love how people find out later that it was a hot chick on the inside.  And then most of the day you’re in a suit, so you can just hang out and eat donuts and be the star of Metroid.  I hope they make a movie out of that.”

The classic Nintendo game was first released in August 1986, and is still a fan favorite among gamers.  The original game featured the adventures of space bounty hunter Samus Aran who protects the galaxy from the dreaded Space Pirates.  The Space Pirates attempt to harvest parasitic organisms known as Metroids in order to gain power and take over the galaxy.  The game has given birth to numerous sequels, one of which debuts later this year.
