There’s chicanery afoot in New York. It could just be a prank of some kind, or it could be the first shot across J.J. Abrams Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ Bow. It seems that a teaser poster has appeared in New York Subways for Mel Brooks long-awaited and recently teased sequel to Spaceballs, Spaceballs: The Search For More Money.
Just last year Brooks talked about the possibility of a sequel saying:
If I did a movie that came out right after Star Wars comes out – maybe a couple of months later – I’d have a big weekend, you know? No matter what, even if it fell on its ass and didn’t get its money back…but that first weekend, the anticipation of seeing Spaceballs 2, would…I still have Daphne Zuniga and I still have Rick Moranis if he’d do it, and I’ve still got me.
Here’s the Instagram post from Jedinewsuk:
Now most folks will laugh these off and say some enterprising fan is having a bit of fun, and that may be the case. The posters are hung with white tape, almost haphazardly, but could Brooks and MGM be taking a page from Ryan Reynolds and FOX‘s Meta-Marketing style?
There’s also the problem of the cast members who have passed, as Brooks mentions in the quote above. If anyone can comically write around that then Brooks is certainly the man to do it. The same holds true for Rick Moranis, if anyone can get him back on the bit screen Brooks is the one, don’t forget that Moranis turned down a cameo for the Ghostbusters reboot.
We’ll probably hear something from Mel Brooks camp or the artist or person/persons involved in the posters soon. Someone is gonna talk sooner or later. When we find out, we’ll let you know.
