When the main adversary of the week is an over-sized man shark, you’ve already got the right bait (yeah!) for a great episode of The Flash, but with a two-week coming up, the show need a hook (boo-yeah!) to make fans invested in the final third of season two. So it was a pretty big deal when last night we finally got a look under the mask of Zoom, and saw who he really was. Hint: it was not Tony Todd. Some fans are surely collecting on bets made with friends today because yes, Zoom is someone we know, and it was one of the most likely suspects strongly hinted at in the last couple of weeks.
If you haven’t watch this week’s Flash yet, bail now!
So after King Shark was dealt with, thanks in not small part to Team Arrow cohort John Diggle, we flash sideways to Earth-2, which is now closed off to Earth-1 thanks to last week’s heroics that also, sadly, cost Jay Garrick’s life. Or did it? Back in Zoom’s lair, the man in the iron mask watches as Zoom dumps Jay’s body on the ground and takes off his own mask to reveal… Jay Garrick! Say what?
To recap, we know that the man in the iron mask tried to tell the captured Earth-1 Barry something about Jay, but got profoundly upset when Barry started to explain that Jay was okay on Earth-1. That was the latest penny to drop. The previous one was the revelation that Jay’s Earth-1 counterpart is named Hunter Zolomon, who was adapted and raised by a different family and never received speed powers. Or did he? Interestingly Hunter Zolomon is the name of the comic book version of Zoom, who didn’t have super-speed per se but could move between seconds making it appear he had super speed.
Unconvinced? Well, Flash executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told EW that yes, the man under the mask of Zoom is Hunter Zolomon.
“Zoom’s identity has been revealed: He is Hunter Zolomon, a.k.a Jay Garrick,” he said. “How all of that plays out and what’s actually happening, we’ll leave for after the break, but we wanted to go out on this run of episodes with a big reveal, just the same way we did at the end of episode 9 in season 1, where we revealed that Harrison Wells was the man in the yellow suit. Zoom’s identity is finally revealed.”
So obviously there’s more to the revelation than Zoom is Zoloman is Garrick, like who’s the man in the iron mask, and is it also hiding the face of Jay Garrick? Is it time to visit the evil twin theory? Time will tell.
The Flash returns with more adventures on March 15.
