The whole idea of the CW adapting the Archie Comics characters in the upcoming pilot Riverdale seemed to be quite unexpected, and further suggested that Hollywood is just plain out of ideas if they’re bringing America’s oldest teenager back to TV. But today, things have gotten real because the parties involved have announced that they’ve cast Archie himself. The redheaded scallywag and his rival in small town music Josie of Josie and the Pussycats are the latest roles to be cast for Riverdale joining Lili Reinhart’s Betty and Cole Sprouse’s Jughead in Greg Berlanti-produced series hoping to be a part of the CW’s 2016/17 line-up.
Courtesy of the Archie Comics website, we’ve learned that non-ginger KJ Apa will play Archie, “an intense, conflicted teen, a boyish high school sophomore who got pumped up over the summer working construction and is now juggling the interest of several girls, as well as trying to balance his passion for writing and performing music — against the wishes of his father and his football coach.” His father, by the way, is being played by former 90210 heartthrob Luke Perry. Apa’s biggest credit so far is from the New Zealand soap Shortland Street.
Meanwhile, Ashleigh Murray has been cast as Josie, who’s described as “a gorgeous, snooty and ambitious girl who is the lead singer for popular band Josie and the Pussycats. She has zero interest in recording any songs written by fellow teen Archie.” Murray is relatively new to the business having appeared in several short films and on an episode of the Fox serial killer drama The Following.
Riverdale, which is being written by Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, aims to shake-up the Archies and all associated characters by promising a “bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge, and will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books—including Archie’s rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones.” The pilot is expected to begin shooting soon, and we should learn by May whether to not it’s been picked up to series by the CW.
We’ll have more news about Riverdale as it becomes available.
