This time last year, we had already gotten a pretty good idea of what Star Wars: The Force Awakens would look like, at least one trailer and several official images. In less than 10 months now, the first standalone Star Wars movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will be released in theaters and other than one cast photo and one leaked concept teaser, we don’t seem to know anything about it. Time to panic? Maybe, but like a junkie looking for a fix, we do have a few details today that have leaked out about the film from Godzilla director Gareth Edwards. (Emphasis on the “few”.)
First up, some inconsiderate and ungrateful crew members from Rogue One seemed to have posted some of the goodies they got for the privilege on eBay. Of course, a real fan would never give up that stuff, not even a gun point, but their loss is our gain, at least so far as we can enjoy the posted images (sadly, this stuff has already been bought and sold).
If you’re interested, that writing under the Rebellion symbol says “Go rogue.” And speaking of going rogue, Making Star Wars got a shot of a Rogue One crew t-shirt.
But enough foreplay. Let’s get into some real spoilers! Or at least as real as spoilers can get from fleeting images of things seen at the annual Toy Fair. Another Star Wars mystery was the lack of Rogue One presence at Toy Fair, but one intrepid report did see something worth reporting.

A couple of things from that: first, the prominence of Darth Vader in the packaging suggests that he’s going to be more than a mere cameo in the film. The mention of a capped figure dressed all in white is also interesting because it confirms a previous rumor concerning the villain played by Ben Mendelsohn, who’s previously been rumored to be a capped figure dressed all in white. Admittedly, that’s thin, but thin is the name of the game, and we’ll move on to another pressing question: is Mads Mikkelsen playing a good guy or a bad guy?
Digging up an interview with Mikkelsen back in August, Making Star Wars believes there’s confirmation about the type of role that the Hannibal actor is playing in the film. “No, my character is actually not a bad guy, and then I can not say more,” he said in the interview. Rumor has had it that Mikkelsen will be playing a character called Galen, an Imperial scientist that helped design the Death Star and is assisting the Rebels in the theft of the plans out of a sense of guilt. Not strictly a bad guy, but definitely a character with some shades of grey, which is right in Mikkelsen’s wheel house.
Making Star Wars also had some news about the various Stormtroopers will see in the movie.
In trooper news, I’ve heard another trooper mentioned called the “Pinnacle Trooper.” At this time I have no point of reference for the design. I do wonder/speculate if it will be the the long-faced black stormtrooper? In other points of clarification, the stormtrooper with the green lights by the microphone areas of the mask are the classic Death Troopers and not the long-faced one we saw in the Donnie Yen-released photo of the masks.
This is the Donnie Yen photo that was posted and then deleted, and you can see how well that worked. The one at the left-hand side may be the aforementioned “Pinnacle Trooper.”
Well know you know *slightly* more about Rogue One than you did at the beginning of this article. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be in theaters everywhere on December 16.
