Fantasy television is all the rage with the kids these days. Game of Thrones continues to decimate the ratings and The Shannara Chronicles just wrapped up its first season and now Hollywood begins looking for a new fantasy project to fill your sword and sandals void. If X-Men director Bryan Singer has his way, fans could be returning to the beloved Conan universe with an R-rated Red Sonja television series.
Bleedingcool.com is reporting that sources are saying that Singer is actively developing an R-Rated series based on the Red Sonja comics, currently being published over at IDW comics. No details are known yet, but considering the rating, that would limit the show to only a handful of networks or streaming services, most likely heading to one of the premium channels like HBO or Showtime.
Red Sonja first graced the screen in 1985 in the aptly named Red Sonja movie starring Brigette Nielson and Arnold Schwarzenegger set within the Conan Universe. Fans got their first glimpse of the beloved “She Devil With A Sword” in the Marvel Comics book Conan the Barbarian #23 in February 1973 and quickly became a cult hit, getting her own ongoing series.
Luke Lieberman, who owns the property, will be executive producing along with Jason Taylor and produced through Singer’s production company, Bad Hat Harry. Singer will be directing and producing with Stephen L’Heureux and Solipsist Films with TWC/Dimension ponying up the money for the show. No word yet if Conan will make an appearance, but you can bet that if this show goes through, fans will be screaming for the Barbarian to show Sonja just what is best in life.
