Netflix is on a superhero roll lately, what with their much-vaunted Daredevil, Jessica Jones and now the upcoming Iron Fist TV series on the air. After wallowing in obscurity in the 80’s and 90’s, Danny Rand (played by Finn Jones) is about to bring a can of butt-kicking down on superhuman crime and he definitely won’t be going at it alone, if the recent reports coming in are anything to go by…
According to a recent report given jointly by MCU Exchange and The Hashtag report, Shang Chi the Master of Kung Fu will definitely making an appearance sometimes later during the TV series’ run of Iron Fist, as the development team are:
“are exclusively auditioning males of Asian descent for the part”
Not that there were really any other contenders for the role, when you really think about it: Shang Chi was, after all, a 70’s kung-fu antihero, the son of Hunan Province’s criminal mastermind, Fu Manchu. He began his comic book career as a shadow agent for the Sino-Soviet state and was trained as a deadly assassin in several school of kung fu, only to later see the error of his ways and fall in with the likes of Luke Cage, become a member of the Avengers for a time and currently be considered to participate in The Defenders, Marvel’s god-mode version of a superteam.
Fans speculate that Shang Chi‘s appearance in the shadow will largely be based on Daredevil‘s Shadowland story arc, where the Kung-Fu Master played a pivotal role in helping the Man Without Fear out of his most recent bind. We’re looking forward to seeing how the series is going to incorporate this much potential for kick-ass, when it hits the small screen later this year.
