Turns out the phrase “I’ll be back,” doesn’t just apply to the Terminator films. Ever since his return to movie making, Arnold Schwarzenegger has had a bit of a hard time finding successful starring roles. The Last Stand, Escape Plan and Sabotage all pretty much tanked at the box office, and proved that Schwarzenegger’s name alone isn’t enough to sell tickets anymore. Even his return to the Terminator franchise was a let-down. While Terminator: Genysis was a success overseas, it wasn’t well-received by American audiences or Terminator fans in general. Terminator: Genisys was practically plagued with bad buzz from day one, so it was almost guaranteed to disappoint. However, despite how underwhelming Genysis was, Schwarzenegger may have a more triumphant franchise-return to look forward to in the near future.
According to Schwarzenegger fansite TheArnoldFans.com, ole’ Arnie has met with director Shane Black to discuss a possible return to the Predator franchise in Black’s newest installment. Schwarzenegger said to the website’s vice-president Ryan Gillen:
“I haven’t talked with him (Shane Black) yet, but I’m going to meet with him for lunch sometime soon. Just as soon as I’m finished with this (Arnold’s Sports Festival) and The Apprentice, and all this stuff. But I will get together with him. If there is any news, we’ll of course let you know right away.”
Unlike the Terminator franchise, Schwarzenegger has only appeared in the first Predator film. He played the role of Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer, a military commando forced to fend for himself after his comrades are picked off one by one by a mysterious alien monster. Schwarzenegger was originally set to return for the sequel in 1990, but a salary dispute stopped him from returning. With Shane Black’s Predator film set for a 2018 release, Schwarzenegger’s return would be the first time in 31 years that he went face-to-face with the ugly motherf****r himself (if it were to happen, of course).
While Terminator Genysis faced bad buzz from the beginning, The Predator is much more anticipated. Shane Black has an excellent resume including Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3, and he was even in the original Predator movie. The pieces are in place for two veteran members of the franchise to make exciting returns to it. Needless to say, turning the new Predator film down would be a huge mistake on Schwarzenegger’s part.
With or without Arnold, Shane Black’s The Predator is set for release on March 2, 2018.
