The thought of yet another Spider-Man reboot already has some viewers rolling their eyes. However, Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has insisted that the story will be different this time around, resembling more of a John Hughes film than a typical origin story. From the look of things, the film will be focus more on Peter Parker’s high school life than the other two Spider-Man film series. In order to fit the film’s high school setting, 19-year-old Tom Holland has already been cast as Peter Parker, making him the youngest actor to play the webslinger. Just today, another fresh-faced actor was possibly confirmed as another character; one we haven’t seen on film before.
Deadline announced earlier today that Disney Channel star Zendaya has been cast in a lead role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming Spider-Man reboot. Deadline reporter Mike Flemming Jr. claims he heard that Zendaya would be playing a character named Michelle, and that he had no knowledge on whether or not she would be Peter Parker’s love interest.
In the Amazing Spider-Man comic series, there is a character named Michelle Gonzales. Gonzales is a lawyer without superpowers whose brother Vin was arrested for his involvement in a conspiracy. She represents him in court and is able to get him a plea bargain. Eventually, she has a one night stand with Peter after Aunt May’s wedding and storms out after he mistakenly calls her “MJ.” Zendaya playing a role like this would certainly be a stark contrast to her lead roles on Shake It Up and K.C. Undercover.
As of right now, there’s no knowledge of whether or not the “Michelle” Zendaya was supposedly cast as is Michelle Gonzales. In fact, her being cast at all is still unconfirmed. While Deadline is usually a pretty accurate source of breaking news, they are not perfect. Recently, they misinterpreted a humorous story in The New Yorker and reported that Sean Penn was going to meet with the head of ISIS. Besides that instance, the only way that this story can be confirmed is if Sony, Marvel or Zendaya says it themselves.
The MCU’s Spider-Man is set to make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016. with the upcoming Spider-Man reboot set for release on July 7, 2017.
