It’s been almost 30 years, but every now and then we still get some news about a Beetlejuice sequel still being in the mix. Like the titular bio-exorcist, no matter how many time you think you’re rid of this idea that they’re still going to crank Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian or something, almost three decades after the fact, it still comes back up in rumor control. So here we are again, and no less than Tim Burton is fanning these flames with the promise that Beetlejuice might still happen, and that two key figures are still up for a comeback.
This new quote from Burton comes from the website ShowbizSpy, and he explained that when Beetlejuice 2 is ready to roll, then stars Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder are on board. “The film is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros. team,” he said. “We have talked with the cast members we wanted for the film and they are all on board, this includes both Winona and Michael. We have the script in hand everything is in place all we need to do now is get ready to start filming.”
As far back as 1990 the participation of Keaton and Ryder in Beetlejuice 2 was predicated on the involvement of Burton as director. The last word on the sequel was last summer and that Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter author Seth Grahame-Smith had finished a script and it was ready for production. Grahame-Smith had been working on it since 2013, and in that time Burton has worked on Big Eyes, and then Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, which is scheduled for release later this year. Whether or not Burton will pick up Beetlejuice after that is uncertain because he’s already signed up for Disney’s live-action adaptation of Dumbo too.
Only one thing’s for sure, when Burton or anybody next talks about Beetlejuice, we’ll have that news for you too.
