Civil War is the big MCU punch-out that’s been hyped to the Moon and back and we can get why, especially considering the wider implications this will have on the larger timeline. While some fans had their doubts, test audiences were particularly hyped after the first screenings and now, Sebastian Stan, the Winter Soldier, had some pretty great first impressions to lay down on us…
“I sat there and basically there was a bowl of candy and fruit and gum in front of me and then there were sparkling waters and I basically sat on the edge of my couch the entire time and ate through the entire bowl of candy. I was overly stimulated with this movie, which I’m so proud to be in because everyone is f***ing awesome in it. Everyone is f***ing fantastic. I walked out of it speechless, and I worked on the movie and I was there! I walked out of there and I had back pain from leaning.”
Which sounds like a way more honest movie endorsement than you’d get from most actors, if we are honest. He didn’t talk about “all the hard work” put into the film and he didn’t go over his favorite performances. He seems to be as hyper about this as a 14-year-old nerd and we gotta say that this simpler approach works the best. Especially considering that Civil War is one hack of a gambit, when you really think about it: bringing every single superhero from every MCU movie so far and adding new ones, just so you can have them beat the tar out of each other is one heck of a movie long shot.
Tom Holland will also be making his first appearance as the brand-new MCU wall-crawler and James Gunn has already gone at length about how great he was at playing the part. Even if some fans were against the original casting of Peter Parker, preferring the new Miles Morales to have starred in the anticipated film. While we have to admit that Miles‘ version of the suit (see a fan rendering below) looks sleeker and edgier than the vanilla, it’s best if the MCU breaks new cinematic ground one step at a time.
On the off-chance you haven’t been following the latest happenings in the MCU, Civil War is the film that will kick off Marvel‘s Phase Three, the third series of films that will expand on their live-action Universe. Civil War will deal with the opposing sides of Captain America and Iron Man, divided over the US Government’s plan to establish a plan of superhero surveillance and accountability, after an Avengers intervention causes considerable (and tragic) collateral damage. Tony Stark, Black Widow, War Machine, Vision and T’challa the Black Panther (making his movie debut) will be on team Iron Man, with Steve Rogers, the Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye and the Winter Soldier siding with team Captain America.
From the looks of the roster so far, Team Iron Man seem to have more staying power and geared for a longer war of attrition, while team Captain America has the power to bust some heads in a single all-important bout but might not last too long in a protracted conflict. We are assuming that Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, the writing team behind the movie’s screen play, have factored this into their story and that the Russo Brothers with the help of producer Kevin Feige have made sure to deliver us a movie that can at least live up to the hype.
So pick a side and get ready for war, fellow nerds. August 24th is rolling in. Will you serve in Heaven with Team Iron?
Or reign in hell with Team Cap?
