In a move that reminds one of that Fall 2012 afternoon when it was announced that the Walt Disney Company was buying Lucasfilm and that a new Star Wars movie was just a few years away, comes the news that a new Indiana Jones movie is now just a few years away. After much speculation about reboots and recasting (Bradley Cooper and Chris Pratt were both mentioned), Disney today has dropped the news that a fifth Indiana Jones movie will be released in the summer of 2019, starring Harrison Ford, and directed by Steven Spielberg! Put on the hat, grab the whip, and get ready for the best news you’ll hear all day!
The exact wording of the press release from Disney Studios is below:
Indiana Jones will return to the big screen on July 19, 2019, for a fifth epic adventure in the blockbuster series. Steven Spielberg, who directed all four previous films, will helm the as-yet-untitled project with star Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. Franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce.
“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”
Famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones was introduced in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark – one of AFI’s 100 Greatest American Films of All Time – and later thrilled audiences in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The four films have brought in nearly $2 billion at the global box office.
This may all seem rather sudden, but Disney execs have made repeated statements that Indiana Jones was on their to-do list, just not with the immediacy that they were looking to get Star Wars out there. On top of that, every rumor about rebooting was met with a resounding ‘No’ from those in the know, who said that there’s only one Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford. Meanwhile, there was rumor and speculation that part of getting Ford signed on to Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the promise that he’d get to don the fedora again in another Indy adventure.
So let the speculation begin! Jeremy R. Hudson from Radio Bastard pointed out that Ford will be 75 when 2019 comes around, meaning that it’s feasible that this new movie could take place in the 70s. Further, there’s no word on what direction the story will take, but Kingdom of the Crystal Skull haters may be relieved about the lack of mention of George Lucas‘ involvement since the storyline in Skull was pursued at his instance. Still, “nuking the fridge” was Spielberg’s idea so who knows where this will go.
Save the date: July 19, 2019. We, of course, will have more news about Indiana Jones 5 as it becomes available!
