Time travel. Kids with superpowers. Gothic setting. Franchise potential. Based on a best-selling book. Is there a box that Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children doesn’t check? The movie based on the 2011 New York Times best-selling novel by Ransom Riggs – his first book by the way – will be released later this year as a big budget movie with an all-star cast, and now we’re getting our fist look at the film in a new trailer. We here at Nerd Bastards listed the film as one of the 10 Non-Comic, Non-Sequel, Original Films Worthy Of Your Time In 2016, so does this trailer live up to our expectations?
As the old saying go, let’s roll tape!
“That was a trailer for a Tim Burton movie?” is the first thought, you might have had. The director has been making a concerted effort to move away from what we’re supposed to think a Tim Burton movie is in the last couple of years, first with Big Eyes, and now with Miss Peregrine’s. That’s a good thing by the way. On top of that, there’s a dearth of Burton regulars in the cast, with only Eva Green, who plays the title character, having worked with Burton before, albeit on Dark Shadows.
As for the trailer itself, it really does sell the idea of the book as Harry Potter meets the X-Men. Asa Butterfield stars as Jacob Portman, a 15-year-old orphan who finds his way to a mysterious island off the coast of Wales inhabited by a group of gifted orphans at a home run by Miss Peregrine (Green). Jacob learns that it’s his destiny to discover his own power and protect the children from the monsters that aim to destroy them. Allison Janney, Rupert Everett, Judi Dench, Chris O’Dowd and Samuel L. Jackson co-star.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will be in theaters everywhere on September 30.
