R-Rated ‘Batman V. Superman’ Blu-ray? Snyder Says Its a Coincidence that Has Nothing to do With ‘Deadpool’
It wasn’t too long after Deadpool’s record-breaking opening weekend when James Gunn’s prophetic words started to come to pass, Hollywood was now crazy about R-rated comic book movies. People started talking about an R-rated Wolverine, and most surprisingly, came the news that there would be an R-rated director’s cut of Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice that will be released on DVD, VOD and Blu-ray later this year. Well, just so you know, at least in the case of Batman V. Superman, none of that had to do with Deadpool. The timing of the announcement may have been suspicious, but it’s not being done because all the cool kids are doing it says the film’s director and producer.
While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Zack Snyder‘s producing partner and wife Deborah Snyder explained that R-rated versions of PG-13 films don’t just happen. “Online, everyone’s like, ‘Oh, they’re doing an R-rated in reaction to Deadpool,’ and you’re like (laughing), ‘We didn’t just shoot it last week, and we also didn’t edit it last week,'” she said.
The implication being that the material was always there to a more R-rated version of the film, but still, would we even be talking about this if Deadpool bombed? Doubtful. As for what exactly will make the R-rated footage R-rated, director Zack went into more detail about that. “The why of that is [the DVD version] is a half-hour longer, and some of that additional material is some of the stuff we took out for the rating,” he explained. “I was like, ‘Cool, I can put it back in for the director’s cut.’ There was nothing by design. This was the material I just put back in, and then when [the MPAA] looked at it again, they were like, ‘Oh, now the movie’s rated R.’ And, by the way, it’s not a hard R. There’s no nudity. There’s a little bit of violence. It just tips the scale.”
Amongst the reportedly 30 minutes of extra footage that will be found in the director’s cut will be Jena Malone‘s mysterious role, and a “giant Easter egg” that has something to do with the Justice League. In the meantime, it’s just one more week till we can Batman V. Superman for ourselves. Dawn of Justice is in theaters everywhere next Friday, and the director’s cut version of the film will be available sometime later this year. Stay tuned for updates.
