You may have heard about Greg Berlanti‘s “modern and subversive” version of the Archie Comics characters that he’s working on for the CW. It’s called Riverdale, and coming from the man behind Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl, it represents a bold departure from comic book shows based on people in costumes and super-powers. Still, Berlanti and his team have been fairly faithful in their adaptations, so will that extend to their work on Riverdale? You know what we’re getting at. Nerdom needs to know that when Riverdale makes its way to our TV screens that Archie Andrews is going to, as he always has, a ginger.
Why so curious? You will note in previous pictures that up and coming New Zealand actor K.J. Apa, whose previous credit is the New Zealand soap Southland Street, is a brunette. Apa was cast as Archie, and since Archie is the most famous redhead in comic books, it would suggest – No, demand! – that Apa would need to visit his stylist and ask for red hair dye number five. And wouldn’t you know…
The new look does suggest heavy inspiration from Mark Waid and Fiona Staples makeover of the comic book series, which makes sense since Archie Comics CCO Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is writing the pilot, and will likely have a role in guiding the new series creatively.
Cole Sprouse (Jughead), Lilli Reinhart (Betty), Camila Mendes (Veronica), Ross Butler (Reggie), Cody Kearsley (Moose), Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl), Ashleigh Murray (Josie), Daniel Yang (Dilton), Casey Cott (Kevin), Marisol Nichols (Veronica’s mom), Madchen Amick (Betty’s mom) and Luke Perry (Archie’s dad) round out the cast. The pilot episode is currently in production. The CW will announce in May whether or not it will be picked up to series from the 2016/17 TV season.
