A new trailer for The Huntsman: Winter’s War has just been released by Universal Pictures, and while Chris Hemsworth plays the title character, it’s Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna that steals the show. Emily Blunt also strikes a fierce image as Ravenna’s sister, Freya, though it’s hard not to view her as Elsa from Frozen come to life. Jessica Chastain rounds out the main cast, playing Sara, a fellow warrior of the Huntsman with whom he takes up a taboo relationship; enraging the Queen.  Not something you generally want to do!The story, directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, spans events that transpired both before and after its predecessor: Snow White and the Huntsman. It’s largely an origins story, but not just for the Huntsman character. Here’s the official plot synopsis:

The fantastical world of Snow White and the Huntsman expands to reveal how the fates of The Huntsman Eric and Queen Ravenna are deeply and dangerously intertwined. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, an epic action-adventure in which they are joined by Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, as well as director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in a breathtaking new tale nested in the legendary saga.
Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.
When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.

Just some thoughts on the trailer: at times it’s pretty hard to discern who’s fighting who. We see the Queen receive the prophecy that her sister will have a baby that will be more beautiful, and any harm to that baby will unleash her sister’s powers to their full potential. Then we see Blunt’s powers manifesting as she screams at an empty (smoldering?) cradle… the conclusion being that someone brought harm to the baby. Now who would have the motive to do such a thing? It’s still unclear to me, at least, as to whether the sisters are on the same side or not. Also, it’s hard not to get Thor flashbacks when, with the way Hemsworth handles his ax, you can easily visualize it as Mjolnir.

Nick Frost, Sam Claflin, and Rob Brydon also star in the film, which hits theaters on Aprill 22nd.  Now here are two new international posters to wash down that trailer with!
