After Robbie Amell teased it this weekend at Toronto ComiCon, Code 8 has now been unleashed onto the world. The short film came out online yesterday, and yes, the point of it is not just to have a short movie on YouTube, but to tease something bigger. This Robbie Amell/Stephen Amell joint looks to combine the style and themes of Chronicle and Dredd into a new sci-fi action story, and the current interest for all things nerdy plus the comic book pedigree of the Amell boys, should definitely peak some interest. But does Code 8 peak your interest? Let’s take a look.
The film takes place in a world where 4% of the population are born with some type of supernatural ability. Instead of being billionaire superheroes, most ‘specials’ live in poverty and resort to crime, forcing the police to become more militarized.
The story follows a young man with special powers (Amell) struggling to find work as a day laborer. After a dispute over payment, he finds himself in a confrontation with a police officer (Kang) and the autonomous robots backing him up.
First, you’ll notice that Stephen wasn’t in the short, and that was because it was filmed last summer whilst he was making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadow, in which he appears as Casey Jones. Still, the cast includes Hannibal co-star Aaron Abrams and Fast and Furious teammate Sung Kang, which is a good foundation to build to something. bigger…
Yes, the Amell cousins are also launching an Indiegogo campaign to raise money for a full feature film version of Code 8, and so far it seems that interest in high. After just a day, the Amell boys have collected $140,000, or nearly 75 per cent of their total goal, and a couple of the perk packages are already sold out. So do you want to give your hard earned money to the Amell cousins? Let them convince you.
