Erik Bauersfeld, Admiral Ackbar Voice Actor, Dies At 93

When most people hear the title, Star Wars, they often think of Luke, Leia, and Han. But, as most fans know, there were so many more people who helped tell the story. No matter how big or small the role, everyone played a part. Two of those characters were, of course, Admiral Ackbar and Bib Fortuna. Both were voiced by the same man, Erik Bauersfeld. Sadly, today, at the age of 93, Bauersfeld passed away.

Before Bauersfeld led the Rebellion against the Empire, he worked as a radio drama producer. In addition to his roles in Star Wars, he was also in movies such as Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak and Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Bauersfeld would return to the Star Wars universe to reprise his role as Ackbar in The Force Awakens.

Interestingly enough, Bauersfeld’s career in voice acting all seems accidental according to him. “The voice work I did in movies was accidental. I was working with Randy Thom on radio dramas at his technical quarters at Lucasfilm. One day Ben Burtt, sound designer for Star Wars, came by and asked if I would audition for a voice in the movie.”

It just comes to show, no matter how big or small, how few or many words, everyone’s role in a movie or telling of a story is important. Bauersfeld may be gone and will be missed, but his work will live on forever in the hearts of Star Wars fans.
