While it will go down as a financial success, after a massive drop off from opening weekend and taking a beating by critics and fans alike, it is probably safe to say that Batman V. Superman is considered a huge disappointment. However, despite the bad reviews, the one thing that everyone seems to have in common is the fact that Ben Affleck’s Batman was the shining beacon in a massive storm of failure. It was rumored several months ago that the WB execs were so taken back by his performance that they wanted Affleck to stick around in the DC universe, even possibly letting him write and direct the first one himself. Well the rumor is at least partially true as WB has announced that Affleck will be directing and starring in his own solo outing as the Dark Knight.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Affleck will helm and star in the first solo Batman outing since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises with Affleck himself having this to say,
It’s been tremendously exciting for us to be a part of the DC Universe, and we’re looking forward to working on Justice League
Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara was at Cinemacon, an annual meeting of cinema operators, talking about the record opening for Batman V. Superman.
“It set up a great foundation for our DC slate, which includes at least 10 movies through 2020. I’m also excited to know that we will be working with Ben Affleck on a stand-alone Batman movie.”
No date has yet been set for the release of the solo film, but many are speculating that it could be either Oct. 5, 2018 or Nov. 1, 2019, the two dates announced by WB as being the release of 2 unnamed DC projects, the other possibly going to Suicide Squad 2. This being just one more tasty layer to an already deliciously large DC Cinematic cake that includes Suicide Squad (Aug. 5, 2016), The Justice League Part One(Nov. 17, 2017), The Flash (March 16, 2018), Wonder Woman (June 2, 2017) Aquaman (July 27, 2018), Shazam! (April 5, 2019), Justice League Part Two (June 14, 2019), Cyborg (April 3, 2020) and Green Lantern Corps (June 19, 2020).
