Just because a studio hires a director, that doesn’t mean the Studio won’t have their nose all up in that director’s business. In fact, in most cases, the studio can go overboard in making suggestions and changes, the dreaded Studio Notes. Just look at The Fantastic Four and director Josh Trank‘s experience, you can see how quickly things went off the rails. What’s frightening is that the same Studio, 20th Century Fox also had Deadpool. Imagine if Fox had taken over director Tim Miller‘s movie and sent him a bunch of Studio notes. Wait a minute, it looks like Fox did send Studio notes to Miller and one note made him wish he’s worn his brown pants that day.
Miller recently talked with Deadline about the success of the movie and why things turned out the way they did. Miller had one story about a Studio Note that could have derailed the movie’s success just as it hit the box office.
The [studio] note that frightened me the most was, ‘We should make this linear.’ The story was always this fractured narrative, and to be honest, it’s a pretty simple story. To tell it linearly would not make that exciting of a movie.
Miller confirmed that the production did make a linear cut of the movie, but thankfully, cooler, and much wiser heads prevailed when the fractured version tested much better with audiences. Just think how bland that linear version must have been, so cookie cutter, as compared to the fractured version we got. The film certainly wouldn’t have gone on to become the highest grossing film of the X-Men franchise and the almost all time grossing “R” rated film of all time, The Passion of the Christ holds that trophy.
Deadpool 2 is already in early production and Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of the first script and producers of the movie are hard at work on the script for the sequel. What other X-Men characters will show up? Cable is pretty much a lock and Ryan Reynolds recently made this statement:
I really do genuinely want to see a Deadpool and Han Solo team-up. I have a non-vocal commitment from Harrison Ford — I read his astrological chart and it looks good for us.
MAKE IT HAPPEN…
