Go to guy Benedict Cumberbatch seems to be unready to stop stepping into iconic roles. The man has portrayed Sherlock, Khan, and Smaug amongst others. Coming on the heels of last night’s Doctor Strange trailer yet another announcement has arrived. A role that many wouldn’t touch with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole!
This year’s CinemaCon had the distinct pleasure of announcing that Illumination Entertainment – you know, those guys who brought us the Minions and Gru – have cast Cumberbatch as the new Grinch!
Most people are familiar with the story of the Grinch from the 1966 cartoon which featured the late great Boris Karloff as the voice of the Grinch. In 2000, Ron Howard sought to reinvent the classic tale, spawning the live action, Jim Carrey movie which most of us would rather forget.
With Illumination taking the helm this time around and the focus returning to an animated style it seems we should have some hope for this version. We can only hope the Cumberbatch will shoot for a more Karloff-ian take on the Grinch, and that the Whos of Whoville will not look suspiciously Minion-esque. The first image of the Grinch looks more in line with the original vision as well, fingers crossed the rest of the animated adventure stays true. We’ll all get to find out next holiday season as How the Grinch Stole Christmas is due to hit theaters November 10, 2017. Will our new Doctor Strange grow his heart that was born two sizes too small??
