The kind of film that exploded into the public eye and captured the hearts of people of all ages, Despicable Me has gone from strength to strength since its 2010 release. Along with its sequel, Despicable Me 2, and spinoff movie Minions, the franchise has grossed a combined total of over $2.5 billion.
NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke confirmed that they would be going ahead with a third movie in June 2017. Writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, the creative force behind the first two films, will be returning to craft the script.
Steve Carrell will be returning, as well, to reprise his role as loveable supervillain Gru. He will also be taking on the additional character of Gru’s brother, Drew, identical in every way aside from a glorious golden head of hair.
While otherwise little else has been leaked about the movie, the studio has now offered fans a cheeky peek at the antagonist, Balthazar Bratt.
Bratt is a washed up child star of the 1980s, who has sought vengeance on an unjust world since his show was cancelled when he hit puberty. Little more than an object of ridicule ever since, his crippling obsession with his own image has driven him to dreams of world domination. As ruler of the world, no one would dare mock him…
In his first ever acting performance that he didn’t direct himself, Bratt will be voiced by Trey Parker, co-creator of South Park. While he is typically found working on more adult projects, Parker’s versatility and ribald sense of humour is sure to lend itself well to the character of a sad ‘80s has-been.
How Bratt’s schemes are planned to worm their way into the lives of Gru and his family remains to be seen. Due to be released in the summer time of 2017, none of the announcements made so far have shaken any doubt that the movie is in safe hands.
