Jackie Earle Haley, of Rorschach and Freddy Krueger fame will be hitting big and small screens again very soon. Haley has become the consummate “bad guy” in recent years and it looks like that won’t be stopping anytime soon. AMC’s upcoming Preacher series recently announced Haley as villain Odin. He’ll be following that will two more villainous turns, but in wildly different areas – The Tick and The Dark Tower.
The upcoming, much anticipated, already controversial Dark Tower adaptation has announced Haley is in talks to play humanoid baddie Richard Sayre. Although the character doesn’t appear until book 5 in Stephen King’s epic series, the timeline for the film is said to be taking a different route so Haley’s Sayre could appear much sooner in the plot. Assuming all goes well in negotiations Haley will join Idris Elba who tackles the role of the Gunslinger himself, Roland, and Matthew McConaughey who will portray the Man in Black. The Dark Tower just recently began shooting and is currently set for release on February 17, 2017.
Amazon recently announced they will be rebooting The Tick starring Peter Serafinowicz (Shaun of the Dead’s “Pete”) as the big blue lead stepping into the shoes of Patrick Warburton who brought the character to life in 2001. Comic creator Ben Edlund is involved in the reboot, but has stated that this Tick will be “darker and more grounded” leaving fans to wonder how today’s gritty superhero style will fare against the hilarious world of the Tick and his sidekick Arthur.
Haley will be playing The Terror, leader of an evil crime syndicate which sounds right up his alley. We will have to wait and see if this allows us a chance to see how Haley does in a more comedic avenue or if this new Tick will be more in his usual vein. So far only a pilot has been optioned by Amazon but hopefully a full series will follow suit to fill the “Spoon!” shaped hole fans have had in their hearts ever since the abrupt and all too soon end of the original series.
No word yet on when we can expect the mighty blue justice to appear but Haley can be seen in Preacher starting May 22, 2016 on AMC and later this fall in Birth of a Nation.
